Ms. Cox is the first openly transgender actress to receive an Emmy nomination. While Hollywood has been increasingly open to portraying transgendered individuals in a positive light -- such as Jarod Leto's Oscar-winning turn last year a transgendered woman in Dallas Buyers Club -- even the progressive entertainment industry falls prey to the stereotype that transgendered people are just men or women in drag. That the Emmy's nominating committee made a point to nominate Laverne Cox as an actress is a welcome change.

Thu, 17 Jul 2014 16:52:00 +0000 Sean Philpott 95075 at http://wamc.org Women’s Philanthropy Of The Jewish Federation of NENY Present Joy Ladin http://wamc.org/post/women-s-philanthropy-jewish-federation-neny-present-joy-ladin
Women’s Philanthropy of the Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York will host Connections 2014 featuring Prof. Joy Ladin at Congregation Ohav Shalom in Albany, NY on Thursday, May 15, at 6 p.m.

“Through the Door of Life: A Jewish Journey Between Genders” will be the theme of Ladin’s presentation as she shares her Jewish journey through the transition process —not just of changing genders, but of creating a new self.

Wed, 14 May 2014 15:35:00 +0000 Joe Donahue 90406 at http://wamc.org Women’s Philanthropy Of The Jewish Federation of NENY Present Joy Ladin 5/12/14 Panel http://wamc.org/post/51214-panel

Today's panelists are WAMC’s Alan Chartock, University at Albany Journalism Professor and Investigative Reporter, Rosemary Armao and political consultant Libby Post.

Topics include:

Topics include:
Ukraine Vote
Rubio Ready
Nigerian Abduction
Hagel reviews military transgender policy
Michael Sam

Mon, 12 May 2014 13:00:00 +0000 Joe Donahue 90209 at http://wamc.org 5/12/14 Panel Lori Duron On Raising A Gender Creative Son http://wamc.org/post/lori-duron-raising-gender-creative-son
Raising My Rainbow: Adventures in Raising a Fabulous, Gender Creative Son is Lori Duron’s poignant memoir of her adventures in raising a gender creative child.
