UMass Amherst Sets Goals To "Green" The Campus

The University of Massachusetts Amherst Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy has endorsed ambitious goals for “greening” the flagship campus. An environmental advisory committee has released an updated Climate Action Plan. It calls for the campus to reach what is known as carbon neutrality by 2050. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “…truth cannot be found by violent means.” That idea is currently the topic of the course Ideas that Changed the World at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Tonight, UMass Amherst history professor and associate dean of the school’s Commonwealth Honors College, Daniel Gordon, will present a lecture titled The Fatal Truth: the Cult of Violence in Western Political Thought. He spoke with WAMC’s Patrick Donges.

UMass Student Killed In Amherst Fire

A UMass student was killed in a fire in an off campus apartment complex in Amherst.

The fire broke out in the predawn hours Monday at the Rolling Green Apartment complex. The State Fire Marshall’s office said the fire appeared to have started in the unit where the deceased person was found. The cause has not determined. The Amherst Fire department said half the units in the 10 unit complex were gutted. A total of 32 people were displaced, 22 of them are UMass students. The Red Cross and University Housing services are assisting them.

Jobs Bill Would Provide Funds For Research Grants At UMass

UMass Satellite Campus Desired In Springfield

The University of Massachusetts is looking at the feasibility of
establishing satellite campuses. The mayor of Springfield wants a
satellite of the flagship Amherst campus located in his city's downtown.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno publically lobbied Monday for
what he called a quicker pace to the four year old Springfield-UMass
partnership.

Group Plans Great Barrington National Historic Site

Great Barrington was the hometown of the late author and civil rights leader and founder of the NAACP. He died nearly 50 years ago.

A parcel of land and home located along route 23 in Great Barrington that was given to WEB Dubois as a gift was bulldozed in the mid-50’s. In the 1960’s, the acreage where the homestead sat changed hands. Currently, UMass Amherst owns the homesite.

The Friends of the Du Bois Home site are planning to include the 5-acre plot Great Barrington and three other locations a national historic site.
