Report: Conn. town's schools seeks security boost

WVIT-TV, an NBC affiliate, reported that school security was a chief topic at Thursday's Board of Education meeting. The board voted to ask the town to include in next year's budget one additional full-time police officer for each of the four elementary schools.

Board members plan to meet with state and federal officials Friday to discuss funding for security.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The first of four public hearings being held by a legislative task force on gun violence and children's safety is being held at Connecticut's Legislative Office Building.

Members of the school security working group are holding the hearing on Friday morning, starting at 9:30 a.m.

Just two days after New York legislators passed first-in-the-nation gun law reforms in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, the state’s chief financial officer says pension fund investments in firearm companies have been frozen. STRATFORD, Conn. (AP) — A proposal to name a school after a teacher killed in the Newtown, Conn., school shootings is set to go before a town council.

Stratford Mayor John Harkins is recommending naming a new elementary school named after Victoria Soto, a 27-year-old Stratford resident who died trying to shield her students from the gunman inside Sandy Hook Elementary School. The shooter killed 20 children and six women at the school on Dec. 14 before committing suicide.

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick is renewing pressure on state lawmakers to pass a bill placing further restrictions on access to guns in the wake of the school massacre in Newtown, Conn.

Patrick's bill would restrict licensed gun owners to purchasing one firearm a month.

The bill would also clamp down on so-called "straw purchasers" who buy guns legally and then resell them to convicted felons and others barred from owning guns.
