Cheshire, MA – Many communities are still in the process of assessing the damage resulting from heavy rainfall over the past week. The wet weather has also kept highway crews in Berkshire County extremely busy maintaining and repairing the many dirt roads that wind through it.

Massachusetts lawmakers override Gov. Romney on pay increase veto

Boston, MA – The Massachusetts state legislature voted unanimously Wednesday to give forty-two million dollars in retroactive pay raises to thirteen thousand state college and university employees. The decision was an override of Governor Mitt Romney's September veto of the pay raise, contracted during former Governor Swift's administration.

Nuclear Plant to Seek Twenty Year License Extension

Vernon, VT – Entergy Nuclear has formally notified the Nuclear Regulatory Commission they plan to seek permission to run the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant for twenty years beyond its 2012 license expiration. But some call the plant antique , and say the license should be allowed to expire. WAMC's North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley has more.

Paper Mill Receives Draft Permit for Tire Test Burn

Ticonderoga, NY – International Paper is a step closer to burning tires to power its mill on Lake Champlain. The company has received a draft permit for a test burn of tire-derived fuel at its Ticonderoga, New York mill. International Paper now faces a 75-day public comment period, a public hearing and a review by the U-S Environmental Protection Agency before the test can be conducted. WAMC's North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley reports.

Drug Company Will Close Northern NY Plant

Rouses Point, NY – Madison, New Jersey-based Wyeth Pharmaceuticals announced Tuesday that it will close its manufacturing plant in Rouses Point, New York. The facility is the largest private-sector employer in northern New York's Clinton County, and local leaders are scrambling to create a recovery plan.
