Environmental Groups Pressure EPA to Better Inspect New York Factory Farms

Albany, NY – Environmental groups issued a report Wednesday calling for tighter regulations of New York's Factory Farms and their policies regarding cow manure disposal. This comes in light of a recent 3-million-gallon liquid manure spill into Jefferson County's Black River that killed 100,000 fish and threatened local drinking water. Center for Constitutional Rights Appeals Case Against MCI and NY DOCS

Albany, NY – The Center for Constitutional Rights filed an appeal in their case against The New York State Department of Correctional Services and MCI on Tuesday. The suit seeks an order prohibiting New York State and MCI from charging prison family members mark-up rates in order to receive a call from an incarcerated loved one. Official Resigns Over Pornographic Images

Ray Brook, NY – Officials at the Adirondack Park Agency say Executive Director Daniel Fitts submitted his resignation today and it was accepted by the agency's board. Fitts resigned after being accused of using his office computer to download images of nude women.

7-Eleven Chain Agrees to Take Steps to Curb Sales of Tobacco to Minors

Plattsburgh, NY – Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York are among 30 states that have reached a deal with Seven-Eleven to crack down on tobacco sales to minors. The convenience store chain is the largest seller of tobacco products in the country. Anti-smoking advocates are applauding the voluntary agreement to curb underage smoking.

Board Chair Removes Himself from Nuke Plant Hearing

Montpelier, VT – The chairman of the Vermont Public Service Board on Wednesday removed himself from a hearing involving plans by the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant to build a radioactive waste storage facility. Opponents of the plan hope it's an indication that the chair will be removed permanently from the case.

NY Assembly Republican Committee Petitioning For Civil Confinement Vote

Clifton Park, NY – The New York State Assembly Republican Steering Committee brought a statewide petition drive to Clifton Park on Thursday. The petitions are intended to force assembly democrats to act on legislation- that would allow courts to hold sex offenders in secure facilities beyond their prison release date, if it is believed that the offenders will recommit their crimes. WAMC's Capital District Bureau Chief Arielle Trimm has more.
