Saugerties Mayor, Supervisor: No to Casino

Saugerties, NY – A pair of elected officials from an Ulster County community are voicing their opposition to the potential for a casino in their backyard. Their stance comes as an Indian tribe is looking to build a casino on the site of the 1994 Woodstock anniversary festival. More from WAMC's Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne.

Nuke fee negotiations tense

Montpelier, VT – Last week, a Vermont House committee proposed charging a multi-million dollar annual fee to Entergy/Vermont Yankee if it grants the nuclear power plant permission to build a dry cask storage facility. It's a concept that's distasteful to the governor and the company. But lawmakers and supporters say the fund is necessary to transition to other energy resources in the future.

NRC Rejects Siren Backup-Power Petition

Buchanan, NY – The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has rejected a petition calling for backup power to emergency sirens at nuclear power plants across the country. Petitioners in the Hudson Valley had called for such backup regarding Westchester County's Indian Point. Now, the petitioners are weighing their next move. Cell Tower Project Under Review

Fort Ann, NY – The Adirondack Council is claiming a report from the Adirondack Park Agency staff signals the end of a controversial cell tower project near Lake George. But the report cited is only one of several to be reviewed, and supporters of the project say the Council is prematurely declaring the project closed.

Great Barrington, MA – Residents in Great Barrington, Massachusetts are voting on a non-binding referendum that would recognize the town as the birth-place of civil rights leader W-E-B DuBois -- which has raised some controversy because of Dubois ties to communism.

Committee considers same day voter registration

Montpelier, VT – A committee of the Vermont House is expected to decide this week whether to support a proposal that would allow people to register to vote on Election Day.
If the measure eventually becomes law, Vermont would join only six other states that allow voters to register on Election Day.
