Helping During Crisis is Conference Theme

New Paltz, NY – The first conference to come out of the Disaster Mental Health Institute at SUNY New Paltz takes place Friday. The Institute began in the fall of 2004, and its director was one of the first mental health professionals to offer support in New York City following the September Eleventh terror attacks. WAMC's Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne reports.

Groups: MA. Governor Cuts Protection as Sprawl Sweeps Region

Northampton, MA – Like New York and Vermont, western Massachusetts is experiencing a building boom. Two leading environmental groups say Governor Mitt Romney has done less than previous governors to make sure farmland is protected from development. SUNY New Paltz Students Call for Drug Policy Repeal

New Paltz, NY – Student government leaders from SUNY New Paltz, along with village officials, will hold a rally later today to call for an end to part of the school's student drug policy. They say the policy's mandatory expulsions go too far. Yet SUNY New Paltz administration officials say they have no intention of changing the rules. Dwindling Tobacco Control Money Means More Young Smoker, Advocates Say

North Adams, MA – Despite 700-million dollars coming into the state of Massachusetts in tobacco settlement money and tobacco taxes, money for tobacco control programs in the state has been cut by 90 percent in the last five years. Advocates say it is leading to more young people picking up the habit.

Governor under fire for Commission Appointments

Montpelier, VT – Vermont Governor James Douglas is defending his appointments to the Vermont Human Rights Commission. Douglas has come in for criticism because he declined to re-appoint the only black member of the five-member commission, replacing him with a white woman. WAMC's North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley has more.
