CT Prison Population Drops

Hartford, CT – Connecticut has the fastest declining prison population in the country. According to new statistics from the U-S Justice Department, the prison population declined 4-point-2 percent last year. As WAMC's Connecticut Correspondent Av Harris reports, the trend has prison reform advocates touting newly enacted state programs.

State Regulators Take a Stand On Trash Burning

Albany, NY – The environmental commissioners of eight states in the Northeast have come together in the name of reducing air pollution from the open burning of household trash. Some environmentalists commend the move, but say that, in New York, at least, more needs to be done. WAMC's Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne filed this report.

Housing Assistance Cuts Affect Cities Thru-out Region

Plattsburgh, NY – The Burlington, Vermont City Council is considering taking a stance on proposed cutbacks in federal rent assistance programs. City councilors are expected to take up a resolution tonight that would oppose the federal "Section Eight" funding cuts. Burlington is not alone, cities across the region are concerned about the potential cuts. North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley has more.

High School Students Protest Air Quality Situation

Hyde Park, NY – Students protested earlier today outside their high school in Dutchess County, New York. They say they were protesting the decision by school officials to keep the school open amid environmental testing of indoor air quality.
