Capital Region Bureau Chief

Dave Lucas is WAMC’s Capital Region Bureau Chief.  Born and raised in Albany, he’s been involved in nearly every aspect of local radio since 1981. Before joining WAMC, Dave was a reporter and anchor at WGY in Schenectady. Prior to that he hosted talk shows on WYJB and WROW, including the 1999 series of overnight radio broadcasts tracking the JonBenet Ramsey murder case with a cast of callers and characters from all over the world via the internet. In 2012, Dave received a Communicator Award of Distinction for his WAMC news story "Fail: The NYS Flood Panel," which explores whether the damage from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee could have been prevented or at least curbed. Dave began his radio career as a “morning personality” at WABY in Albany.

NYC bans big, sugary drinks at eateries, theaters

New York City's health board has passed a rule banning super-sized, sugary drinks at restaurants, concession stands and other eateries. WAMC's Dave Lucas has details.

The regulation passed Thursday puts a 16-ounce size limit on cups and bottles of non-diet soda, sweetened teas and other calorie-packed beverages.

The ban will apply in fast-food joints, movie houses and Broadway theaters, workplace cafeterias and most other places selling prepared food.

It doesn't cover supermarkets or most convenience stores.

NY official expected to investigate press leaks

New York's inspector general is expected to investigate what are being called leaks of inside information to reporters from the state ethics board. WAMC's Dave Lucas has more...

The state Joint Commission on Public Ethics is investigating sexual harassment in the Assembly, including allegations against a Democrat and a $103,000 settlement using public money.

Several commissioners complained during this week's meeting about what they said were leaks of inaccurate information about their votes and discussions behind closed doors the week before.

NY's top court to hear police discipline case

New York's top court will consider whether police from a Hudson Valley town are subject to discipline under their union contract or municipal law. WAMC's Dave Lucas reports.

In a case with possible implications for police statewide, Wallkill officials maintain they have the authority under town law and that it supersedes the state statute providing for police discipline set by collective bargaining.

Fare Hikes For MTA Riders With or Without PMT?

MTA

Metro-North commuters are being warned they may have to dig deeper into their pockets - a watchdog group is telling them to prepare for a fare hike of around 32 per cent - Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Dave Lucas reports.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority's"Payroll Mobility Tax" or PMT - was approved by former Governor David Paterson in 2009 to avert service cuts as the MTA battled a record deficit. Last month, a judge ruled the PMT unconstitutional.

Security Lawsuit Filed Against Indian Point

A security lieutenant at the Indian Point nuclear power complex has filed a $1.5 billion lawsuit in state Supreme Court, claiming the facility is unsecure, and that staffers regularly watch DVDs, play video games and sleep on the job. The funding is allocated through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Improvement Program.

Ahead of NY primary, campaign ads, fliers get mean

With New York's state primary election just two days away, the advertisements in some races have taken a nasty turn. WAMC’s Dave Lucas reports.

Often, the ads aren't linked to a candidate but are cloaked in secrecy.

In a New York City Senate primary pitting incumbent Democrat Shirley Huntley against city councilman James Sanders Jr., a flier using racially charged language accuses the state attorney general of a "political lynching" for indicting Huntley on corruption charges.

Huntley is black. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is white.
