Capital Region Bureau Chief

Dave Lucas is WAMC’s Capital Region Bureau Chief.  Born and raised in Albany, he’s been involved in nearly every aspect of local radio since 1981. Before joining WAMC, Dave was a reporter and anchor at WGY in Schenectady. Prior to that he hosted talk shows on WYJB and WROW, including the 1999 series of overnight radio broadcasts tracking the JonBenet Ramsey murder case with a cast of callers and characters from all over the world via the internet. In 2012, Dave received a Communicator Award of Distinction for his WAMC news story "Fail: The NYS Flood Panel," which explores whether the damage from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee could have been prevented or at least curbed. Dave began his radio career as a “morning personality” at WABY in Albany.

NY audit finds painkiller Rx errors

New York auditors say they uncovered 325,000 errors and inconsistencies in prescriptions for painkillers and other commonly abused drugs in a review of 28.5 million prescriptions dispensed over 15 months. More from WAMC’s Dave Lucas

The audit says the state Health Department's Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement has tightened processes but it still faults poor controls over unused prescription forms and inconsistent bureau inspection practices.

Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says the bureau needs to pursue new ways to prevent, detect and prosecute prescription fraud.

NY governor: LIPA 'has to end'

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the Long Island Power Authority "has to end." More from WAMC’s Dave Lucas

Cuomo made the critical remarks Wednesday while helping to pass out holiday meals to Hurricane Sandy victims in Lawrence, Long Island.

According to Newsday, Cuomo also said LIPA  "hasn't worked in a long, long time." LIPA did not immediately respond to a comment request.

Cuomo has formed a commission to investigate the responses of utilities following the superstorm. The governor said he expects a "full report in a matter of weeks."

Storm leads to Thanksgiving rental car shortage

Thanksgiving travelers who have yet to rent a car in the Northeast are out of luck: Superstorm Sandy has created a shortage. More from WAMC’s Dave Lucas

The storm has damaged thousands of cars — including those owned by rental companies. The loss of vehicles has been compounded by rising demand. Thanksgiving and Christmas are normally busy rental periods. And lingering mass transit problems caused by Sandy have added to demand.

Chevron says NY official abused shareholder power

New guidelines recommend HIV testing for more people
