Capital Region Bureau Chief

Dave Lucas is WAMC’s Capital Region Bureau Chief.  Born and raised in Albany, he’s been involved in nearly every aspect of local radio since 1981. Before joining WAMC, Dave was a reporter and anchor at WGY in Schenectady. Prior to that he hosted talk shows on WYJB and WROW, including the 1999 series of overnight radio broadcasts tracking the JonBenet Ramsey murder case with a cast of callers and characters from all over the world via the internet. In 2012, Dave received a Communicator Award of Distinction for his WAMC news story "Fail: The NYS Flood Panel," which explores whether the damage from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee could have been prevented or at least curbed. Dave began his radio career as a “morning personality” at WABY in Albany.

Obama Visits Albany High-Tech Center with Cuomo

Governor Andrew Cuomo has praised President Barack Obama's leadership as the two men toured a high-tech facility in Albany created out of a partnership with private enterprise and bipartisanship. WAMC’s Dave Lucas reports…

Cuomo made jobs and the economy part of his "new Democrat" movement in his 2010 campaign. Speaking during a tour of a nano-technology facility Tuesday, Cuomo said Obama has bought the nation "through the storm."

When Obama took the stage, he and Cuomo embraced and the president returned the praise his own speech, saying Cuomo has done "outstanding work."

NY Governor Andrew Cuomo says no to Empire Zone tax credits

On Monday, Senator Liz Krueger of Manhattan wrote a letter to Governor Andrew Cuomo and Empire State Development Corporation President and CEO Ken Adams concerning reports that ESDC planning to restore Empire Tax Credits to 545 businesses that had their benefits stripped in 2009. Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Dave Lucas reports.

Senator Kruger says even though the Empire Zone program has sunsetted, some companies continue to draw on credits that were pre-approved for a ten year period.

Smoke Inhalation Killed NY Police Captain, Family

A county coroner in New York says a police captain, his wife and two daughters who died in a house fire this week were killed by smoke inhalation. WAMC’s Dave Lucas reports.

Putnam County Coroner William Stahl said Wednesday that the Larchmont police captain, Thomas Sullivan, and the others all died of asphyxiation from breathing smoke and carbon monoxide.

Stahl says that probably means the family died before being burned in the fire at their home early Tuesday in Carmel.

NYC Officials Sue Police over Response to Protests

Four New York City lawmakers are suing the city over its treatment of the Occupy Wall Street protests. WAMC’s Dave Lucas reports

The civil rights suit was filed Monday in a Manhattan federal court. It says police conduct is so problematic that the force needs an outside monitor.

The city Law Department had no immediate comment Monday. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has defended police handling of the protests.

Occupy demonstrators have gone to court before over particular episodes. The new lawsuit is a compendium of complaints.
