Utility Companies Bracing For Hybrid Storm

National Grid, Central Hudson, Orange and Rockland, Consolidated Edison and other power companies spanning the Hudson Valley are preparing for a risk of severe weather on Monday and Tuesday.

Statue of Liberty reopens on 126th birthday Sunday

The Statue of Liberty is set to reopen to the public on Sunday, the U.S. landmark's 126th anniversary. WAMC's Dave Lucas has details.

The statue has been closed for renovation to its interior, although the public has been allowed to visit its Liberty Island grounds in New York Harbor.

The $30 million renovation that began last year included replacing the stairs to the crown and making them less steep. There are now 393 steps, instead of 354.

NY court rejects horse trainer's appeal of ban

New York's top court has rejected Kentucky Derby-winning thoroughbred trainer Rick Dutrow Jr.'s appeal to overturn his 10-year ban by state regulators because of what he claimed were substantial civil rights issues.

In asking the Court of Appeals to hear Dutrow's case, attorney Michael Koenig said it should decide whether the appearance of bias by Racing and Wagering Board Chairman John Sabini cost the trainer his right to a fair proceeding over drug violations.

Authorities say an upstate New York police chief has admitted he knew about sex crimes against underage victims but didn't do anything about it. WAMC’s Dave Lucas has more…

Ulster County District Attorney D. Holley Carnright said Tuesday that town of Ulster Chief Matthew Taggard pleaded guilty to a charge of official misconduct. He was suspended in June and retired in September.

Corning may make job cuts as part of cost cuts

Corning says that it will likely cut costs, which may include "modest" job cuts, to support profit in a weak economy. WAMC’s Dave Lucas reports.

The glass and ceramics maker's stock dropped 5 percent in premarket trading Wednesday.

It's the latest manufacturer to warn that the slowing global economy is hurting its business.

The Corning, N.Y., company says its third-quarter net income dropped 36 percent to $521 million, or 35 cents per share. Revenue is down 2 percent to $2.04 billion in the July-September quarter. Results still topped Wall Street expectations.
