Capital Region Bureau Chief

Dave Lucas is WAMC’s Capital Region Bureau Chief.  Born and raised in Albany, he’s been involved in nearly every aspect of local radio since 1981. Before joining WAMC, Dave was a reporter and anchor at WGY in Schenectady. Prior to that he hosted talk shows on WYJB and WROW, including the 1999 series of overnight radio broadcasts tracking the JonBenet Ramsey murder case with a cast of callers and characters from all over the world via the internet. In 2012, Dave received a Communicator Award of Distinction for his WAMC news story "Fail: The NYS Flood Panel," which explores whether the damage from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee could have been prevented or at least curbed. Dave began his radio career as a “morning personality” at WABY in Albany.

Siena Poll: Consumer Confidence Rising in Utica

Consumer confidence increased in eight New York state metropolitan areas in the second quarter, according to the latest Quarterly Consumer Sentiment survey from the Siena College Research Institute.

Central New Yorkers are more confident about their immediate financial wellbeing than at any time in years, according to the Siena poll released Thursday. Siena Research Institute Founding Director Doug Lonnstrom says the New York City region had the highest overall consumer confidence of the nine, while the Binghamton region ranked lowest.  Lonnstrom adds Albany is doing well.

Citizen justice advocates have events planned heading into the weekend in a show of solidarity with those they believe are unjustly imprisoned...

Yassin Aref, the Albany imam convicted of material support for terrorism along with pizzeria owner Mohammed Hossain after a 2006 FBI sting, is preparing to file a new appeal asking for a new trial. This after Aref discovered significant new evidence about his case.

The Albany-area gets a quick demonstration of flash flooding … The National Weather Service defines a flash flood as "rapidly rising water that usually occurs within two hours of the start of high intensity rain." Wednesday afternoon In the city of Albany, it took little more than five minutes for mother nature to produce a small demonstration of the phenomenon.

Flood Victims Look To Government For Assistance

The waiting list for federal funds to help homeowners and businesses rebuild in the wake of flooding across Central New York and the Mohawk Valley is growing.

The flash flooding brought on by the heavy rains of June 27 and 28 devastated many communities across Central New York. Residents in many flooded communities along the Mohawk River are waiting for help - looking to Albany and Washington for assistance in cleanup and rebuilding.

County Nursing Home Impasse Continues

The Albany County Executive has been on a mission to privatize the 250-bed Albany County Nursing Home, while county legislators have been heading in the opposite direction, trying to keep the facility not-for-profit and under county control.  

On Monday, the Albany County Legislature voted to authorize McCoy to retain a law firm to assist in formation of a local development corporation to manage the facility. McCoy says he cannot legally do that.

Siena Survey: NY Consumer Confidence Up

New numbers just out on consumer confidence in New York State and employment nationwide are leading to cautious optimism from those who monitor the pulse of the economy.

The latest numbers on consumer confidence for New York State show some improvement. The latest New York State Index of Consumer Sentiment survey from Siena College’s Siena Research Institute shows that consumer optimism grew in June for the the second month in a row.

NY Conducts "Texting While Driving" Clampdown

Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced the start of a new summer crackdown by the New York State Police on distracted driving. The up to $1 million effort will consist of increased enforcement and patrols, particularly through undercover operations using unmarked State Police SUVs to catch distracted drivers.
