Capital Region Bureau Chief

Dave Lucas is WAMC’s Capital Region Bureau Chief.  Born and raised in Albany, he’s been involved in nearly every aspect of local radio since 1981. Before joining WAMC, Dave was a reporter and anchor at WGY in Schenectady. Prior to that he hosted talk shows on WYJB and WROW, including the 1999 series of overnight radio broadcasts tracking the JonBenet Ramsey murder case with a cast of callers and characters from all over the world via the internet. In 2012, Dave received a Communicator Award of Distinction for his WAMC news story "Fail: The NYS Flood Panel," which explores whether the damage from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee could have been prevented or at least curbed. Dave began his radio career as a “morning personality” at WABY in Albany.

Fast-Food Workers Push For Raise At NY Capitol

Hundreds of low-wage workers and advocates descended upon Albany today to urge the Senate and Assembly to pass legislation that would raise the state minimum wage to $10.10, index it to inflation, and allow cities and counties to set their wages 30 percent higher than the state’s minimum.

SUNY Plaza To Host Farmer's Market Year-Round

A year-round farmers’ market in has been launched in downtown Albany.

The farmers’ market at SUNY Plaza comes under Governor Andrew Cuomo's FreshConnect program, giving area farmers the opportunity to market their produce locally. It's also designed to bring fresh food to communities.

East Greenbush Board Supports Casino Plan

Casinos top the list of issues that have been driving the area agenda. Governor Andrew Cuomo put the wheels in motion during his second State of the State address in 2012. "Let's amend the constitution. Let's do gaming right. Let's make it safe. Let's protect our people. Let's get the jobs back in New York."

The governor reasoned that building new gambling casinos would prop up New York's failing economy.   In November 2013, Cuomo's proposition was approved by voters, and  "casino chatter" has dominated the headlines ever since.

NY AG 2014 Campaign Underway

Albany County Executive Dan McCoy and Ulster County Executive Mike Hein have weighed in on the race for New York State Attorney General.

While McCoy and Hein's endorsements Thursday of a fellow Democrat came as no surprise, a Siena College poll released in April found that 53 percent had no opinion of sitting first-term Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, leaving the door open to a challenge.

Negotiations Underway Over NY Medical Marijuana

The lead sponsor of a measure to legalize medical marijuana in New York says negotiations are underway with the governor's office and the Assembly in hopes of having an agreement by Monday.

Sen. Diane Savino's comment came Thursday as Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he's open to the so-called "Compassionate Care Act," but has reservations about the drug being exploited.

While the Staten Island Democrat met with reporters, the bill moved from the finance committee to the rules committee, its final stop before a vote in the Republican-led Senate.

Albany Airport Unveils 6 Electric Car Chargers

The New York Power Authority and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority on Wednesday unveiled the first of 100 planned installations they’re partnering on to charge electric vehicles statewide.  It's part of a larger effort that seeks to encourage more electric vehicles and the infrastructure to support them.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver says Assemblyman Micah Kellner, a Manhattan Democrat, will lose his Albany and district offices and staff allocation by month’s end.

NY Speaker Pushes For Minimum Wage Hike, Dream Act

New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has renewed his push to increase the minimum wage and pass the Dream Act as lawmakers work toward adjournment.

Silver told reporters Wednesday the two measures are top priorities :  the minimum wage proposal would raise the wage to $10.10 per hour and allow cities like New York to impose a local minimum wage  up to 30 percent higher.

The Dream Act would extend financial aid to students who are in the country illegally.
