Lalor calls for gas tax cap

WAPPINGERS FALLS – Republican State Assemblyman Kieran Michael Lalor announced Tuesday that he will introduce legislation to cap tax on gasoline at the national average. While standing at a Wappingers Falls gas station, the freshman lawmaker also urged residents to call Governor Cuomo’s price gouging hotline to demand Albany “stop the tax gouging at the pump.”

Lalor said a gas tax cap would save motorists 20 cents per gallon.

Donnery promises to take back Orange County government

Orange County, New York Legislator Roxanne Donnery has officially thrown her hat into the ring as the Democratic candidate for county executive.

Donnery addressed a room of over 170 supporters in Highland Mills about what she believes to be the state of county government.

“My God, what has happened to this county? Where is the trust?” she said.

The shuttered Orange County Government Center and Valley View nursing home were key issues Donnery addressed.

“You want your government back and I’m going to give it to you,” Donnery said.

Sullivan authorizes bonding to pay for communications upgrade

MONTICELLO – The Sullivan County Legislature voted unanimously to authorize issuing bonds, next year, to pay for a major upgrade of the county’s emergency communications system. 

During public comment at Thursday’s monthly meeting, Al Dumas, a member of the Monticello Fire Department, put it in terms of history and pop culture.

“From smoke signals from maybe 400 years ago that was used and might have guided the Mayflower ship into port in 1621 to the light from Batman in 1966, the whole idea is that we need to know what’s going on,” Dumas said.

Fanslau to leave Sullivan County employment in one week

MONTICELLO – Sullivan County Manager David Fanslau will end his county employment at 12:01 a.m. on March 2, Legislature Chairman Scott Samuelson and Fanslau announced at the close of the business day on Thursday. 

The announcement came after the monthly county legislature meeting during which legislators, by a five-four majority, adopted a local law requiring only a simple majority to hire or fire a county manager.

The legislature and Fanslau have “amicably agreed to enter into a separation agreement” ending his position as county manager.

Governor wants to require gas stations to install backup generators to pump gas

ALBANY – Governor Andrew Cuomo proposes that gas stations be required to install backup generators to power their gas pumps in the event of a power outage triggered by natural disaster like Superstorm Sandy.

The plan, announced on Wednesday, would require that all gas stations within a half-mile of highway exists and evacuation routes have a transfer switch installed and to deploy and install a generator within 24 hours of losing power during a fuel supply or energy emergency.
