Close Congressional Race in Northern NY

Congressman Bill Owens at Democratic Headquarters

The race between the incumbent Democrat and the Republican challenger in NY’s newly drawn 21st Congressional District remained close all evening.

The race stayed within a few percentage points between incumbent Democrat Bill Owens and Republican Matt Doheny all evening.

It was just after midnight, when about 4-thousand votes separated the contenders, that Congressman Bill Owens arrived at Democratic Headquarters in Plattsburgh.

Airline Eyes Florida Service to New England Cities

A new airline is looking to create nonstop service from several New England airports to Florida after receiving certification from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Based in Portland, Maine, Elite Airways hopes to establish nonstop regional jet service between Portland International Jetport and Melbourne International Airport in Florida.

Propane Leak Forces Move of Vermont City Polling Place

Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos says a propane leak in downtown Barre is forcing city officials to move the polling location.

Condos says the fire department ordered that that the electricity be shut off in the neighborhood around the Barre Auditorium, the city's polling location. The leak was detected at around 2 p.m.

Condos says he has sent officials from his office to help move the polling area to the Old Labor Hall on Granite Street.

Vermont Man Charged With Embezzling Copper Wire

Vermont police say a Swanton, Vermont man has been charged with embezzling large quantities of copper wire from a cable company where he worked as a supervisor and selling it to a scrap metal dealer in New York.

Colchester Police say 44-year-old Stephen Davis is accused of stealing more than 14,000 pounds of wire from Champlain Cable Corporation in Colchester and selling it for more than $46,700.

Police say Davis also is facing a charge of income tax fraud for failing to report the income.

3 Soldiers From Upstate NY Killed in Afghanistan

Military officials say three U.S. Army Reserve soldiers from upstate New York have been killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense has identified the soldiers as 29-year-old Staff Sgt. Dain Venne of Port Henry, 22-year-old Spc. Ryan Jayne of Campbell and 27-year-old Spc. Brett Gornewicz of Alden.
 
The Pentagon says they died of wounds suffered Saturday when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device in Paktia province.

Amount of Posted Land on the Rise in Vermont

The amount of posted land in Vermont has gone up in recent years.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife says the numbers have increased since 1971, from 100,000 acres to 230,000 last year.

Unless a person takes measures to enclose or "post" their property, anyone who is properly licensed can go onto their property and hunt, fish, or trap there.

Once a person posts their property, hunters, anglers, and trappers must get permission from the landowner to conduct those activities.

Vermont Courts System Dealing with Software Problem

The Vermont court system hopes to reach a settlement soon with a software company over its online case management system.

In 2009, the system signed a $5 million contract with a Utah company to design a computerized system that would allow users to access case records at any time.

But court administrator Robert Greemore says it's not working. He tells Vermont Public Radio he hopes to reach a settlement with the vendor, New Dawn Technologies, by the end of the year.

The state has spent $1.7 million on the case management system.

Vermont Town Police Department Expanding

The police department in the Vermont town of Castleton has hired two officers and is extending weekend coverage hours.

The Rutland Herald reports the addition gives Castleton three full-time officers, although it is authorized for four and is looking to fill the space.

One of the officers, Jeffrey Warfle, has a police dog, a 6-year-old black Labrador retriever named Doc.
