Several New York state Senators gathered this morning at the capitol in Albany to introduce a package of legislation they say would strengthen the state’s agricultural industry.

WAMC’s Patrick Donges spoke with Senator Patty Ritchie, Republican of the 48th district and chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee about the "Grown in New York" plan.

Today we are discussing two hot topics – how the so-called sequester could affect the 2014 midterm elections, and fracking in New York.

The budget cuts known as sequestration took effect last Friday, and while the overall effects of the cuts on national and local economies and government efficiency have yet to be realized, the effect of the cuts on the national political landscape may be coming into focus this week.

Joining us on this edition of Medical Monday on Vox Pop is St. Peter’s Hospital Chief of Medicine Mark Pettus.

He’s a clinical associate professor of medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and the former medical director of the Kripalu Institute for integrated healing, located in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. WAMC’s Alan Chartock hosts.

New statistics released this week by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show that from June 2011 to June 2012 Saratoga County experienced the largest employment growth in New York State at 3.1 percent, with strong job growth in manufacturing and leisure and hospitality.

World renowned American classical pianist Van Cliburn died this morning at his home in Fort Worth, Texas at the age of 78.

WAMC’s Patrick Donges spoke with international recording artist and WAMC classical music commentator Yehuda Hanani this afternoon for some insight into Cliburn’s death and life.

Today on Vox Pop we welcome Dr. Frank Akawi of Greenfield Animal Hospital in Greenfield Center, New York.

A native Jordanian, Dr. Akawi studied animal science as an undergraduate in Baghdad. Once in the United States, he earned a masters degree in reproductive physiology, an MBA, and a PhD in pet health management. He also obtained a veterinary degree from Ross University.
