Poll: Majority of New Yorkers Favor Increase in State's Minimum Wage

A new poll finds the overwhelming majority of New Yorkers would like to see the state raise its minimum wage. Governor Cuomo does not rule the proposal out.  Capitol Correspondent Karen DeWitt reports...
 
The Quinnipiac poll found that 78% of those surveyed think the state's minimum wage should be higher than the current $7.25 an hour, with more than half saying it should be increased to over $8.50 cents an hour.

New York Finds No Child Abuse of Kennedy Heir

A letter made available to The Associated Press says an investigation prompted by a Kennedy heir's attempt to take his infant son from a New York maternity ward has found no evidence of child abuse. WAMC's Dave Lucas reports...

The March 30 letter from the state child protection agency says a report of suspected child abuse against Douglas Kennedy, the son of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy, was determined to be unfounded.

VT Governor Signs Mental Health Bill

Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin has signed into law an overhaul of the state's mental health system.  WAMC's Pat Bradley reports...

Wednesday's bill signing was the culmination of a process that got underway in earnest after Tropical Storm Irene in late August flooded and forced the closing of the Vermont State Hospital.

Poll: New Yorkers Decry Secret Dealing in Budget Talks

A statewide poll finds New Yorkers think the secrecy and closed-door deals that led to last week state's budget approval are unnecessary and a serious problem. WAMC's Dave Lucas reports...

The Quinnipiac University poll is a rebuke of the continued "three-men-in-a-room" method of crafting a budget by Governor Andrew Cuomo, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos.

The poll finds that 55 percent of voters said the closed-door negotiations weren't necessary to achieve the budget.

Last night in San Antonio, Tim Duncan netted 10 and grabbed 16 boards, as the Spurs recovered after blowing a 17-point lead to beat the Celtics 87-86.  San Antonio's won nine straight.

Former MA Treasurer Cahill Faces Arraignment

Ex-state treasurer Timothy Cahill and two former aides are scheduled to appear in court to face ethics charges.  WAMC's Tristan O’Neill reports...

Cahill will be arraigned later today at Suffolk Superior Court.

He’s facing public corruption charges for his alleged role in orchestrating an advertising campaign for the state lottery, funded with taxpayer dollars. Prosecutors said the television ad was really intended to boost Cahill's failed 2010 campaign for governor.

VT Governor Promises to Bring Jobs to Bennington

Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin is promising to work with municipal officials and business owners to bring new jobs to the Bennington area.  WAMC's North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley reports…

Shumlin spoke Monday at a luncheon sponsored by the Bennington County Regional Commission.

He says long-term improvements in infrastructure, education and a renewed focus on agriculture will increase the number of jobs and lead to wage increases for employees who have suffered from stagnant earnings.

Well as they have all season, Baylor stands atop the women's college basketball world...

Last night, the 40-0 Lady Bears finished their perfect season with a thorough 80-61 win over Notre Dame to wrap up their second NCAA title in seven seasons.  The Lady Bears' 6-foot-8 dunking center Brittney Griner, who scored a game-high 26 points, was a slam dunk for most outstanding player.
