Welch to Host VT Phone Meeting on Student Loans

Vermont Congressman Peter Welch says he wants to hear from residents about their struggles with student loans.  WAMC’s Tristan O’Neill reports…

Congress is at loggerheads over how to avoid a July 1st doubling of interest rates on some Stafford Student Loans, and Welch and the head of the Vermont Student Assistance Corp. will be holding a telephone conference call Wednesday evening with people concerned about the issue.

Welch will be joined on the 7:30 call by VSAC's Don Vickers.

WAMC's Daily Sports Wrap

Well the Spurs are in the NBA record books and halfway toward another appearance in the NBA Finals…

TNT had the coverage of Game 2 last night in San Antonio, where Tony Parker poured in 34 points, in guiding the Spurs to a 120-111 dismantling of the Thunder.  The Spurs set an NBA record with their 20th consecutive win bridging the regular season and the playoffs.  The Thunder, who trails in the series two-games-to-none, hosts Game 3 tomorrow night.

Tonight, Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals between the Heat the Celtics.  Miami leads the series 1-0.

Police: NY Car Assist Leads to Wire Fraud Arrest

State police say a trooper who stopped for a disabled car in Westchester County discovered the driver was wanted by the Secret Service for an alleged $1 million wire fraud.  WAMC’s Tristan O’Neill reports…

The arrest occurred Sunday evening on the Sprain Brook Parkway in Yonkers.

Darrin Foster, of the Bronx, is accused of stealing the money from his former employer, an investment firm in Westport, Conn.

Police also discovered that Foster allegedly had a suspended license for failure to pay child support.

First Lady Sponsoring Future Navy Submarine

First lady Michelle Obama is sponsoring a future Navy submarine named after her home state.  WAMC’s Tristan O’Neill reports…

The White House said Tuesday that the first lady has accepted an invitation to be the sponsor of the future USS Ilinois, a Virginia-class submarine being built in Groton, Conn., and Newport News, Va. The new attack submarine is expected to join the fleet in late 2015.

As sponsor, Mrs. Obama will be involved in the life of the submarine and establish a special link to the ship's sailors and their families.

Too much Heat on Memorial Day?  Maybe for the Celtics!

Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals last night on the hardwood in Miami, Lebron James' alley-oop dunk, two of his game-high 32 points, helped the Heat take the conference opener from the Celtics 93-79.  Sound courtesy of ESPN.  The Heat and Celtics were tied at the half, but the Heat picked up its defensive intensity, limiting Boston to just 33 second-half points.  Kevin Garnett netted 23 for the Celtics, who’ll try to even up the series in Game 2 Wednesday.

Purple Heart Commemoration in NY's Hudson Valley

A Memorial Day ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the Purple Heart medal is set for New York's Hudson Valley.  WAMC’s Tristan O’Neill reports…

The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor says the event will feature the presentation of Purple Hearts to two veterans.

The event is Monday afternoon in New Windsor, near the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Well the Spurs stunned the Thunder to take the opener of the Western Conference Finals…

On the hardwood last night in San Antonio, Manu Ginobili, who scored 11 fourth quarter points, finished  with 26, rallying the Spurs from a nine-point deficit to stun the Thunder 101-98.  Sound courtesy of TNT.  Tony Parker added 18 and Tim Duncan chipped in 16 for the Spurs, who won their 19th in a row - tying the NBA record for longest winning streak kept alive in the playoffs. Kevin Durant led all scorers with 27.  Game 2 is tomorrow night in San Antonio.

Man Arrested in Disappearance of NYC Boy Etan Patz

Authorities in New York City say they've cracked a 33-year-old case that helped focus national attention on missing children — the disappearance of Etan Patz.  WAMC’s Tristan O’Neill reports…

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly announced Thursday that 51-year-old Pedro Hernandez has been arrested on a murder charge. He’s awaiting arraignment.  It was the first arrest ever in the 1979 case.

Kelly says Hernandez confessed to choking the boy and putting his body in the trash.

Well Miami is into the Eastern Conference finals…

On the court last night in South Beach, that Lebron James dunk, two of his 28 points, helped the Heat close out the Pacers in Game 6 105-93.  Sound courtesy of the ESPN. Dwayne Wade led all scorers with 41.  The Heat now awaits the winner of the Celtics-76ers series – those two tangle in Game 7 tomorrow night in Boston.
