Quebec Premier Postpones Vermont Visit

Quebec Premier Jean Charest is postponing his visit to Vermont where he had planned to meet with Governor Peter Shumlin and other business and government leaders.  WAMC’s Tristan O’Neill reports…

Charest planned to sign a trade and environmental protection agreement with Shumlin on Thursday and then attend events with the state's business community and at the University of Vermont.

Shumlin's office says Charest will remain in Quebec City so he can attend debates in the national assembly.

VT Building Evacuated Because of Chemical

A government building that houses the Vermont governor's office had to be evacuated after some state workers starting feeling sick.  WAMC’s Tristan O’Neill reports…

The employees at the Pavilion Building in Montpelier reported having headaches and watery eyes on Wednesday.

The source appears to have been a waterproof sealant that was being applied to the outside bricks and wafting into the building.

The employees were sent home and the building was being ventilated.

WAMC's Daily Sports Wrap

Well the Devils have taken a 3-2 series lead in the Eastern Conference finals…

On the ice last night in New York, Ryan Carter's tally in the waning moments of the third period helped the Devils hang on to beat the Rangers in Game 5 5-3.  Sound courtesy of NBC.  New Jersey grabbed the early lead, scoring three times in the first ten minutes, but the Rangers regrouped to tie the score at 3-3 before that Carter goal.  Zach Parise added an empty netter for the Devils, who can finish off the Rangers in Newark Friday night.

MA Officials Fighting Zebra Mussel Invasion

State environmental officials are kicking off a plan to fight the spread of the invasive zebra mussel in Massachusetts.  WAMC’s Tristan O’Neill reports…

Later today, Department of Conservation and Recreation Commissioner Edward Lambert and Department of Fish and Game Commissioner Mary Griffin will outline plans at a press conference at Pontoosuc Lake in Pittsfield,

Zebra mussels can multiply quickly, disrupting local ecosystems by covering other freshwater mussels and cutting off resources for other species.

WAMC's Daily Sports Wrap

Well the Kings are headed to the Stanley Cup finals…

Game 5 on the ice last night in Glendale, Dustin Penner's tally at 17:42 of overtime lifted the Kings to a 4-3 series-clinching win over the Coyotes.  Sound courtesy of CBC.  Los Angeles advances to the championship series and awaits the winner of the Rangers-Devils series.  Those two skate in Game 5 tonight – their series is tied at two.

Quebec Premier to Visit Vermont, Sign Pact

Quebec Premier Jean Charest is due in Vermont this week to meet with Gov. Peter Shumlin and other business and government leaders.  WAMC's Tristan O'Neill reports...

The visit is set for Thursday, when Charest and Shumlin are to gather at Shelburne Farms to sign an updated agreement between the state and the province on environmental, trade and other issues.

New Fund to Help Displaced VT Mobile-Home Owners

 A total of 524 mobile homes were damaged in Vermont during Tropical Storm Irene. And many homeowners are still recovering, some paying more for housing.  WAMC's Tristan O'Neill reports...

A new fund has been set up to help mobile-home owners in Vermont who were victims of Irene or flooding last spring.

It was started with a gift of $50,000 from a Middlebury couple, David and Eleanor Ignat.

Organizers say $500 grants will be awarded to eligible applicants. The deadline is July 16.

Well the Spurs have punched their tickets to the NBA’s Western Conference finals…

On the hardwood last night in Los Angeles, Tony Parker hit two consecutive baskets in the final two minutes, finishing with 17 points and six boards, as the Spurs rallied to knock out the Clippers 102-99.  The Spurs, who’ve won 18 straight games, advance to the conference finals where they await the winner of the Thunder-Lakers series.

WAMC's Daily Sports Wrap

Two blowouts last night in the NBA postseason…

On the court in Indiana, George Hill poured in 20 points, Roy Hibbert added 19 points and grabbed 18 boards, as the Pacers pasted the Heat 94-75.  Miami was again without Chris Bosh, who’s sidelined with a strained abdominal muscle, and his absence showed.  Mario Chalmers led the Heat with 25 points, Lebron James had 22, and Dwayne Wade scored just 5 points in the loss.  Indianapolis, who leads the series two-games-to-one, hosts Game 4 Sunday afternoon.

Well the Devils have evened the Eastern Conference finals at a game apiece…

On the ice last night in New York, David Clarkson's tip-in at 2:31 of the final period proved to be the game-winner, as the Devils grabbed home-ice advantage from the Rangers, beating the Blueshirts 3-2.  Sound courtesy of NBC.  Game 3 is Saturday afternoon in New Jersey.
