2 Vermont Senators Want Halt to Wind Development
Two Vermont state senators are calling for a three-year moratorium on large-scale wind power projects in the state, and for giving energy projects more thorough environmental review.
Senators Robert Hartwell of Bennington County and Joe Benning of Caledonia County say they've been hearing from many constituents who say there's been inadequate public participation in deliberations over big ridge-top wind power projects to date.
Renewable energy advocates are sharply criticizing the proposal, saying it will be bad for Vermont's economy and do damage to the state's efforts to combat climate change.
Governor Peter Shumlin says he's cool to the idea. Shumlin this past fall appointed a special siting commission to study state processes for reviewing proposed renewable energy projects.
