24 Burlington Schools Staff Members Receive Layoff Notices

Teachers and staff members with the Burlington School district are poised for a third consecutive year of staff cuts.
The district sent letters to two dozen staff members late last month alerting them their positions will be eliminated in the coming school year. The layoffs amount to about 16 full-time positions.

The Burlington Free Press reports district officials say fewer positions could actually be cut. Most cuts are expected to come from Burlington High School, but would also affect most of the district's six elementary schools and two middle schools.

The district says enrollment at the high school has declined nearly 25 percent over the previous decade, resulting in numerous under-enrolled classes that can be consolidated.

Superintendent Yaw Obeng was at a conference Monday and not available for comment.
