Alan Chartock - The Vito Lopez Sex Scandal

Faced with the possibility of being expelled from the state legislature as soon as next week, State Assemblyman Vito Lopez, a Democrat from Brooklyn, today said he would resign on June 20th at the end of the legislative session and run for a seat on the New York City Council.

The office of Assembly Speaker Sheldon says it will move ahead with efforts to remove Lopez from office. Lopez sexually harassed several female staffers, which led to secret payouts arranged by Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver to keep the allegations out of court. WAMC’s political observer Dr. Alan Chartock shared his analysis with WAMC’s Brian Shields.
