Albany Non-Profit Weathers The Economic Storm
By Dave Lucas
Albany, NY – For a quarter of a century, The Center For Law and Justice has been a fixture of the downtown Albany community. Capital District Bureau Chief Dave Lucas reports how the center is weathering the tough economy...
One of Albany's strongest black voices, Executive Director Alice Green founded the Center for Law and Justice in 1985. The Center and its services expanded from there - providing community education, monitoring criminal justice, offering help to those who walk-in - and they do: its legal director Annie Rody-Wright says the Center handles 3-thousand requests or "invites" every year. In 2010, the center, like many other not-for-profit agencies, is having difficulty obtaining funding. Green says the donations have slowed at the worst possible time and she notes that along with the economic fallout comes social fallout. No matter what happens, Green vows the center will remain even if she's the only person there.
