The Republican Party's endorsed candidate for Connecticut lieutenant governor is conceding defeat in the three-way race.

State Rep. Penny Bacchiochi was trailing Groton Town Council member Heather Somers by a tiny margin but said Wednesday a recount was not likely to put her over the top. She said after reviewing the updated results that a recount would be too time-consuming.

Bacchiochi, a six-term representative from Stafford, vowed to help the Republican ticket led by Tom Foley, build support in its challenge to Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. Foley bested state Senate Minority Leader John McKinney to represent the GOP in November’s gubernatorial race.

Unofficial results show Bacchiochi was within a thousand votes of Somers after Tuesday's vote. Former U.S. Comptroller General David Walker trailed in third place.
