Britain's Justin Rose Takes U.S. Open
At the U.S. Open, Justin Rose claimed his first major championship at Merion Golf Club, holding off Phil Mickelson and Jason Day. “It’s surreal because it is something you dreamed about. Something you have thought about. Something you have spent countless hours working towards,” said Rose. That sound was courtesy of ESPN. Rose closed with an even-par 70 for a 1-over total that made him the first Englishman to win the event since Tony Jacklin in 1970.
In the NHL Finals, the Bruins take on the Chicago Blackhawks for Game 3 tonight at 8:00 p.m. The series is tied at a game apiece after the Bruins evened it up Saturday night with a 2-1 victory.
Elsewhere on the ice, on Friday New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that Utica Memorial Auditorium is the new home to an American Hockey League team – the Utica Comets.
Moving over to baseball news, the Yankees' five-game losing streak is over after Mariano Rivera struck out Albert Pujols with the bases loaded to preserve a 6-5 win over the Angels. Elsewhere in the American League, Chris Davis hit his major league-leading 23rd home run as Baltimore topped Boston 6-3. Detroit beat Minnesota 5-2 and Oakland cruised ahead of Seattle 10-2.
In the National League, it was the Mets over the Cubs 4-3. Miami won against St. Louis 7-2. Pittsburgh doubled up the Dodgers 6-3 and Atlanta blanked San Francisco 3-0.
Checking hoops news, the Spurs took Game 5 of the NBA Finals beating the Miami Heat 114-104. They now take a three-games-to-two lead in the series and have a chance to win the Championship Tuesday in Miami.
Finally in NASCAR, Greg Biffle captured the Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway.
