The basement of an historic Adirondack hotel that was sold to a New Hampshire company earlier this month is a soggy mess after it was flooded by up to 10 feet of water from a burst pipe.
Officials in the village of Saranac Lake tell the Adirondack Daily Enterprise that a sprinkler line at the Hotel Saranac is believed to have broken last Friday night after it became frozen.
The property manager overseeing the hotel for Wilton, N.H.-based Roedel Companies didn't notice the problem until Tuesday morning. By then, officials say 6 to 10 feet of water had flooded the basement of the 86-year-old hotel.
Power and water to the hotel was shut off, and fire crews and village public works employees spent Christmas Eve pumping out the basement before turning the operation over to the hotel.
