Bus drivers and paraeducators in a Vermont school district have voted to go on strike Dec. 5 if a new contract isn't reached by then.

61 union members who have worked for 18 months without a contract have rejected the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union's use of retroactive contract terms.

The union members belong to the Rutland Northeast Education Association. A representative tells the Rutland Herald the two big sticking points are health insurance and wages.

The strike would affect Otter Valley Union High School and elementary school students in the towns of Leicester, Sudbury, Whiting, Goshen, Brandon and Pittsford, as well as Mendon and Chittenden in the Barstow Unified Union School District.

James Rademacher, a negotiator for the district, said the school board met Wednesday night and agreed to resume negotiations with the support staff union.
