Cashman: Alex Should Just... Shut Up
Third baseman Alex Rodriguez is in hot water with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman after he tweeted that his hip surgeon cleared him to play in rehabilitation games. Cashman told ESPN.com that when the Yankees want to announce something, they will and added that "Alex should just shut...up."
Checking baseball scores, the Yankees beat Texas 4-3 on Ichiro Suzuki's two-out homer in the bottom of the ninth. Travis Hafner, Brett Gardner and Jayson Nix also belted solo homers. That ended the Rangers' five-game winning streak. The Red Sox beat the Rockies 11-4. Dustin Pedroia drove in four runs and had three of Boston's season-high 20 hits. It was the White Sox over the Mets 5-4.
In the American League, the Angels defeated Detroit 14-8 and Tampa Bay won against Toronto 5-1.
Checking interleague play, Miami doubled up Minnesota 4-2. Atlanta beat Kansas City 4-3. St. Louis crushed Houston 13-5. Oakland outscored Cincinnati 7-3 and Pittsburgh topped Seattle 9-4.
In the National League, it was Washington over Arizona 7-5. The Cubs fell to Milwaukee 9-3. Philadelphia beat San Diego 6-2 and the Dodgers bested San Francisco 6-5.
In tennis news, Serena Williams has stretched her winning streak to 32 matches as she seeks her sixth Wimbledon title defeating Mandy Minella of Luxembourg, 6-1, 6-3.
In hoops news, the Clippers have introduced Doc Rivers as head coach and senior vice president of basketball operations after finalizing his acquisition from the Celtics.
Checking news on the ice, the Vancouver Canucks have hired John Tortorella as their new head coach. Tortorella was dismissed by the New York Rangers after reaching the playoffs the last three seasons but failing to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals.
Finally, UCLA has its first-ever national championship in baseball after completing a two-game sweep of Mississippi State. The Bruins defeated the Bulldogs 8-0.
