Mohegan Sun has initiated the process of petitioning for a recount of Tuesday’s referendum in Palmer where the company’s $1 billion western Massachusetts casino project was narrowly defeated.
The company said in a statement it is seeking a recount of all the ballots cast in Tuesday’s referendum. A total of 5,221 people voted, and the casino was turned down by a margin of 93 votes, according to the town clerk. Mohegan Sun lawyer Kevin Conroy said there were problems with a voting machine.
If Tuesday’s outcome is affirmed in the recount it would leave MGM’s Springfield casino project as the only one being considered for a state gaming license, but MGM has yet to pass a strict background check.
