Clinton Correctional Prisoners Say They Were Beaten After Pair Escaped

A legal services group says inmates who knew the two men who escaped from a maximum-security prison in northern New York reported beatings by guards trying to determine where the pair went.

Attorney James Bogin at Prisoners' Legal Services of New York says other prisoners on the Clinton Correctional Facility honor block were later moved to other prisons, some into solitary confinement and are still missing property.

The New York Times first reported the alleged beatings Tuesday, noting 60 inmate complaints filed.

A 23-day manhunt by more than 1,100 law enforcement officers followed the June 6 escape of murderers Richard Matt and David Sweat.

Matt was fatally shot June 27 about 30 miles from the prison. Sweat was shot and recaptured nearby two days later.

Corrections officials did not immediately comment.
