Communities Across Hudson Valley Mark Veterans Day
Across the land Americans give pause to commemorate our Veterans: ceremonies honor the nation’s current and former service members. WAMC's Dave Lucas reports from Albany's Veterans Day Parade.
Hundreds of people gathered for remembrances this weekend and today: from a solemn Veterans Day observance in Hyde Park, to a gathering at Saratoga National Cemetery in Stillwater.
Near the Nation's Capitol, President Barack Obama praised military veterans as he addressed families gathered Sunday during a ceremony at Arlington Memorial Cemetery.
Many cities and towns are holding parades - people lined both sides of Albany's Central Avenue as one vet told me the event reminds us all we are proud Americans. One woman watching the procession waved a homemade sign. A few feet away a young family of New Americans - a young son with his mother and father, cheering marching soldiers on - the father explaining he is proud of his new country. A World War II vet wistfully looked on, recalling his march down the parade route with CBS classmates, 67 years ago. A woman had her three young grandkids, each waving a tiny flag, in tow: she said they were there to watch the parade and learn a little about American History.
Albany County officials celebrated this Veteran's Day by bringing 'Soldier On', an organization that provides transitional housing and support services to veterans, to the Capital Region. The new Albany County Veterans Resource Center opened in Colonie on Sunday.
Major restaurant chains like Denny's and Chili's are offering veterans free meals today to active duty, retirees, and veterans in the service. Call or check with local eateries to see if they're participating in any Veterans Day offers .
