Congressman Neal To Lead Tour To Highlight Rail Projects

WAMC

Officials Monday are going to highlight federally funded upgrades to rail lines in Connecticut and western Massachusetts.

Massachusetts Congressman Richard Neal is going to lead a delegation of 50 community leaders on a train ride from New Haven through Hartford to Springfield.  $73 million dollars was spent on the regional rail line. Tim Brennan, of the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission said the improved infrastructure will support expansion of commuter rail.

"Our plan is ambitious. We want to have trains running back and forth from at least Greenfield to Springfield."

Springfield’s historic Union Station is undergoing an $82 million renovation that is to be finished in 2016.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
