DAR marker at NYC church to honor Saratoga hero

Horatio Gates was the winning general in a history-changing battle, yet the Revolutionary War figure lies forgotten in a grave somewhere in a New York cemetery. WAMC's Dave Lucas has more...

This weekend the Daughters of the American Revolution dedicate a memorial marker to Gates at the graveyard at historic Trinity Church in Manhattan's financial district. The exact location of his grave is unknown.

The DAR marker lauds Gates as the "Victor At Saratoga" for commanding the American forces that defeated a British army in 1777 following two battles fought 175 miles north of Manhattan.

DAR officials say Sunday's dedication ceremony will honor a forgotten American military hero for his role in what many historians consider the turning point of the Revolutionary War and one of history's most important battles.
