Veteran Democratic Congressman Edward Markey has won the special election for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts to succeed John Kerry .

Senator-elect Markey told cheering supporters in a Boston hotel ballroom that he was deeply humbled and profoundly grateful for the victory.  He said he would go to the Senate to build a “ bold and bright” future for everyone in Massachusetts and across the country. He said he would work to create clean energy jobs.  Markey received 55 percent of the vote Tuesday to 44 percent for Republican newcomer Gabriel Gomez.  Gomez, in a gracious concession speech said he wished Markey all the best.  He gave no hint about his future political plans.  Markey will likely be sworn in as the state’s new Senator in early July.  He’ll be up for reelection in 2014.
