Energy and Transportation Discussed by New England and Eastern Canadian Leaders
The annual meeting of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers was held in Burlington VT on Sunday and Monday. Renewable energy and transportation were the focus of discussions.
The region’s leaders looked at renewable energy and how it can be more efficiently distributed across the region. One of the most significant resolutions passed during the conference, and one that the Conservation Law Foundation characterized as “bold”, creates a first in the country regional procurement market for renewable energy. Massachusetts Assistant Secretary for Energy Steven Clarke introduced the resolution.
The afternoon session looked at transportation, specifically electric vehicles and the infrastructure needed for charging stations. Quebec Premier Jean Charest.
The governors and premiers also discussed high speed rail goals for the region. The conference also hosted a delegation from China, who spoke to the regional leaders near the conclusion of the meeting. Governor Peter Shumlin introduced Executive Vice Governor Liu Guozhong.
Co-Chairs Peter Shumlin and Jean Charest said the conference was extraordinarily productive.
The next meeting of the New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers will be held in Quebec City.
