Entergy Says Nuke Plant Closing Costs Not Covered Past 60 Years

Entergy/NRC

An official with Vermont Yankee nuclear plant owner Entergy Corp. says it's offering no guarantees that the company will pay to decommission the retired reactor if the job's still not done at the end of a 60-year period.

Entergy Vice President Michael Twomey told members of two Vermont legislative committees on Wednesday that if decommissioning is not done by the end of a so-called "safe-store" period, he expects there would be litigation, with the state and Entergy taking different positions.

Twomey says he does not believe it will come to that. He says plans are for a fund to see enough investment growth to cover the costs of decommissioning and that the job will be completed within 60 years.
