The federal Environmental Protection Agency has notified Vermont officials that they will sign off on the state's plan to clean up Lake Champlain.
The state's plan call for the volume of phosphorous entering the lake to be reduced each year from 631 metric tons to 418. Farms found responsible for the largest amount of the pollution will be expected to do more in the cleanup efforts and make necessary changes.
Officials say the deteriorating water quality of the lake could potentially affect property values and area beaches.
Governor Peter Shumlin says going forward there will be a lot of investments in cleanup efforts.
