An annual event to promote riding bicycles to work is taking place this week in Massachusetts.
Bay State Bike Week began 15 years ago as a small event in the Pioneer Valley. Now it includes hundreds of events statewide including organized rides, commuter breakfasts, and bike rodeos. Jim Scheffler commutes by bicycle between his home in Springfield’s Forest Park neighborhood and downtown.
" It takes a certain amount of confidence to do it and some experience. There are some streets where the traffic is bad and bike lanes and bike infrastructure could make it better."
Springfield opened its first bike lanes on a city street only last year.
