FEMA Sends Storm Relief Supplies To New England

The Westover Air Force Reserve base in Chicopee Massachusetts is the primary staging area for the federal government’s coordinated response to Sandy in New England.  WAMC’s Paul Tuthill reports

Cots and blankets were trucked south to Connecticut Monday to stock shelters. A shipment of water and meals was to follow today, according to Bryan Toman of FEMA

Some 70  truck loads of supplies including water, meals, blankets, cots, and large electric generators arrived at the base 48 hours ahead of Sandy.  130 people mostly from FEMA and the US Army Corps of Engineers are stationed at the staging area  set up on a taxiway in one of the far corners of the sprawling air base.  More relief supplies are in the pipeline.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
