Former Town Clerk And Treasurer Says She Threw Away Records

A former Vermont town clerk and treasurer under investigation for missing money says she threw away a computer thumb drive containing financial records.

Cynthia Diaz told a judge on Tuesday that she threw away the thumb drive after she lost her jobs in June because she no longer needed it.

The town has alleged that Diaz cost it more than $800,000 in losses, based on a forensic audit.

The Caledonian Record reports that the select board had filed a lawsuit against Diaz, seeking documents so that the town can conduct an audit. She has been under a court order to produce all that she has.

Diaz is representing herself in the lawsuit.
