The head of Vermont's child protection department is resigning to lead a community based nonprofit organization. His resignation comes in the aftermath of two infant deaths that has prompted increased scrutiny of the state's child welfare system.
Governor Peter Shumlin says Department for Children and Families Commissioner David Yacavone will be replaced by Ken Schatz, general counsel for the Agency of Human Services.
Shumlin praised Yacacone for his commitment to keeping children safe, making sure that families have access to help and quickly addressing problems.
A legislative committee was formed this year to examine the workings of the child welfare system after the deaths of two toddlers who had been under state supervision.
Last month Shumlin also announced the dismissal of Doug Racine, who was secretary of the Human Services Agency, which includes DCF.
