Troy, NY – New York State has invested millions of dollars to install supercomputers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Stony Brook, the University at Buffalo, and other sites. RPI hosted a high-level panel discussion Friday to explore how supercomputing can help small, mid-size, and large companies boost innovation and become more competitive. WAMC's Dave Lucas stopped by the conference and files this report.

The discussion is part of a 3-day national workshop on advantages Industry could gain through the use of High-Performance Computing: the RPI gathering overseen by the New York State High Performance Computing Consortium known as HPC2 - the HPC2 partnership between science and education organization NYSERNet, Rensselaer, University at Buffalo, Stony Brook University, and Brookhaven National Laboratory aims to help steer New York toward a technologically-heavy future.

UBuffalo interim CEO Tom Furlani explains the process embraces the concept of cloud computing. He notes the cloud computing concept linking chains of computers to work on a problem simulateneously has applications in medicine, engineering and construction. The ultimate goal of HPC2 is to broaden New York State's competitiveness in Research and development, and to increase support for job growth in the "R&D" field itself.
