Hundreds of health and safety violations have been found by audits conducted at Western Massachusetts county jails. The Springfield Republican reports that the Department of Public Health’s audit of county jails in Worcester, Hampden, Franklin, Hampshire and Berkshire counties ranged from a low of 90 violations in Hampshire County to a high of 262 repeat violations in Worcester County. Officials from the sheriffs’ offices say they face budget constraints when it comes to fixing larger problems but do deal with many of the violations with daily maintenance.
