A New York state assemblymember hosted the first Hudson Valley Girls Summit.
Democratic Assemblymember Didi Barrett hosted the summit that brought together 30 participants from more than 20 organizations and programs that advocate on behalf of girls in the mid-Hudson Valley region, from both rural and urban parts of Columbia, Dutchess, Orange, and Ulster Counties. Barrett says the meeting covered a range of topics - from media pressures on girls to transportation challenges in the region. She says groups serving Hudson Valley river cities, including Hudson, Poughkeepsie, Beacon, Newburgh, and Kingston, found they faced similar challenges. Barrett, who has been a longtime advocate for empowering women and girls, says a number of people reached out over the last year to voice their concerns about issues facing girls around the region.
