Industrial Fire Kills Thousands Of Livestock

Thom Hallock/Mountain Lake PBS

Tens of thousands of chickens died in a fire Thursday at one of the largest egg producing farms in New York.

Emergency responders from across northern New York, Vermont and Canada responded to the Giroux Poultry Farm in Chazy, NY late Thursday morning.

One of five large barns housing about 50,000 hens in a free-range setting burned to the ground.  Chazy Fire Chief Michael Cahoon:  "We were able to keep the fire just to this one building. There's five other buildings here. Actually they are interconnected. But we were able to stop the fire."

Giroux distributes to eastern New York and New England.  In 2007 it produced more than a million eggs daily, the state’s largest egg producer.
