Judge Denies Firearm Use For Cop Charged With Shooting Suspect

A Vermont judge says a police officer facing criminal gun charges for shooting a suspect will not be given permission to use a firearm for a day so he can maintain his firearms certification.
In a ruling Friday, Superior Court Judge Nancy Corsones rejected the request by suspended Windsor Police Officer Ryan Palmer. As a condition of his release, Palmer is not allowed to use firearms.

Corsones cited the severity of the charges and the fact that his version of events in the shooting last November is at odds with the surveillance video.

Palmer continues to serve as his department's firearms instructor. His attorney had argued the public would not have been placed at risk by letting him use firearms for one day.

Palmer, now working for the Windsor police as a civilian and is the department's firearms instructor, is charged with firing at a vehicle last November. The driver suffered minor injuries.
