Vermont is poised to become the first state to require public and private health insurance to cover vasectomies without copays and deductibles.
Vasectomies and allowing women to get oral contraceptives for 12 months without repeated doctor's office visits are among the types of birth control covered in a bill Democratic Governor Peter Shumlin signed into law on Monday.

Planned Parenthood of Northern New England CEO Meagan Gallagher calls it the most comprehensive birth control bill in the country. “Other states have done pieces of the law, but VT is the first state to combine them in this significant way.”

The industry trade group America's Health Insurance Plans says it opposes the law. It says the law fails to address the underlying prices charged for the services.
