Demand is running strong for medical marijuana in Massachusetts now that the first dispensaries have opened.
In its first three weeks of business, New England Treatment Access in Northampton provided marijuana to 1,428. About 40 new patients come through the door every day.
Norton Arbalaez, the company’s consultant for standards and practices, said the Northampton dispensary opened on Sept 28th in a former medical office and sees patients seven days a week.
" If you live in Springfield or anywhere in western Massachusetts this is the only place you can have safe legal access," said Arbalaez.
The first medical marijuana dispensary in Massachusetts opened in Salem in June. It served 1,500 patients in the first two months, according to the Boston Globe. The paper reports the average New England Treatment patient is 47-years-old. Two-thirds of the patients are men.
