Massachusetts officials are hailing a decision by the Supreme Court upholding a 2011 Environmental Protection Agency rule designed to limit emissions that create smog and soot in the air above states along the East Coast.Tuesday's ruling is seen as boost to the Obama administration's efforts to reduce power plant pollution in 27 Midwestern and Appalachian states that blows downwind and leads to unhealthy air.
Massachusetts was one of the East Coast states that pushed for the rule.
Attorney General Martha Coakley called the ruling "a victory for public health and the environment" that will help limit hazardous pollution.
U.S. Senator Edward Markey, a member of the Senate's Environment and Public Works Committee, said the decision was a "huge win for cleaner air, clearer lungs, and healthier lives for families in Massachusetts."
