Merging Vermont School Districts Clears Final House Vote

It's on to the Vermont Senate for a plan to streamline Vermont's school districts from nearly 300 to 50 or 60.

The Vermont House on Thursday gave final approval on a voice vote to a measure whose backers say will expand opportunities available to students while trimming costs.

Final passage came after extensive debate, including complaints from some Republicans that the bill does not go far enough to make real progress on reducing property taxes.

Rep. Heidi Scheuermann, a Stowe Republican, failed in her effort to win passage of an amendment aimed at replacing the bill with a working group that would develop more sweeping reforms.
